Elizabeth Phoenix once used her unique skills as a psychic to help in the Milwaukee Police Department’s fight against injustice. But when Liz’s foster mother is found viciously murdered—and Liz is discovered unconscious at the scene—her only memory of the crime comes in the form of terrifying dreams...of creatures more horrific than anything Liz has seen in real life. What do these visions mean? And what in the world do they have to do with her former lover, Jimmy Sanducci?
While the police question Jimmy in the murder, Jimmy opens Liz’s eyes to a supernatural war that has raged since the dawn of time in which innocent people are hunted by malevolent beings disguised as humans. Only a chosen few have the ability to fight their evil, and Jimmy believes Liz is among them. Now, with her senses heightened, new feelings are rising within Liz—ones that re-ignite her dangerous attraction to Jimmy. But Jimmy has a secret that will rock Liz to her core…and put the survival of the human race in peril.
Ever wonder what it would be like if you lost everything you ever loved or needed? Would you have the courage to carry on after all seems lost? Not only does Elizabeth Phoenix show us what guts and determination can do, but she does it with lots of sass and a dash of psychic power.
Liz, a natural born psychic, gets thrown into a doomsday prophecy that she has known nothing about her entire life, nor does she feel she is ready to take on the role she is supposed to fulfill. With help from friends and foes alike; Ruthie, Jimmy and Sawyer, she sees that she truly is needed to aid in averting the end of the world. Ruthie is her guide to the paranormal, Jimmy makes her feel safe and protected, and Sawyer helps her to understand her power. Her bond with Jimmy is the strongest, yet most strained due to their past romantic history and their need to knock each other down a notch with witty and sarcastic humour.
The way the reader is introduced to the different paranormal entities that are encountered in the book was very creative and original. There were many new types of demons that I have never read about and was very intrigued to learn about. One thing that sticks out in my mind is Lori's idea of shape shifters and how we always assume that shifters are normally human that can shift to animal form, yet she has beings that are animals most of the time and human only sporadically.
This novel has the perfect blend of paranormal and sexual activity – a bit of fear, a bit of raw passion, with a small amount of true love in the mix. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see how the different relationships progress, as well as learning about new demons and monsters.
