Determined to earn the respect of her sister, Kylie Miller sets off on her first inter-dimensional assignment. As a recon Mimic, it’s her mission to discover the fate of a mysterious woman believed to be her people’s best hope for defeating their enemy.
Kylie’s investigation leads her to the Crimson Carousel and a badass cop named Dalton. She doesn’t understand the intoxicating attraction drawing her toward the handsome human and dark forces are at work to ensure her first assignment is her last. Only by uniting with a healer from Kylie’s home dimension can she and Dalton prepare for the battle ahead, or hope to survive an uncertain future.
This is book three of the Crimson Carousel series, and because I hadn't read the first two, I was a bit confused by some of it. Though the warning in this book says it is stand alone, I felt a bit like I had come in at the middle of something.
I did like the characters who were well-defined and interesting. Kylie is the younger sister, wanting to prove her worth, trying to live up to her sister’s accomplishments. She doesn’t realize her own worth, and feels that she will always be in the shadow of her warrior sister. Dalton is the strong, smart aleck human cop, handsome and sexy and attracted to Kylie. Once the lust compulsion is broken, he decides to help find the mystery woman.
Olav is the healer sent from Kylie’s dimension to help her recover her energy. He is strong but gentle, and has been in love with Kylie for a while. It takes both men to restore Kylie to health, and Dalton is at first uncomfortable with the other man in the picture, but soon realizes to have Kylie, he will accept Olav as well.
This story had promise, but I was not sure where it was headed at times. The sex was hot and heavy, but there seemed to be less emphasis on finding the woman than on how many times they could make Kylie orgasm. Then, near the end of this, a new element was added with little warning. A new enemy is introduced and is also seeking the same woman, so the story becomes a different one altogether.
I really did enjoy these characters and so can only hope that this story continues, as this installment ends without a real resolution to the search, although Kylie, Dalton and Olav do resolve their issues and form a trio to continue the search. I would say that these need to be read in order to thoroughly enjoy the story and grasp the full idea behind it.
