Lorella Constonce runs a boarding house in 1887, Giddings, Texas, not a brothel. If she ran the latter, she might know how to entice the sexy Sheriff Jefferies to more than just her dinner table. The need to hide something from him doesn’t help her cause.
Treydon Jeffries has a dead body in town and he suspects Lorella knows more than she’s telling. Treydon’s determined to discover her secrets, even if he has to seduce them out of her. With as many fantasies as he’s had about Lorella, he wouldn’t mind taking charge and finally putting her where she belongs—in his bed.
Sometimes the one person you need the most is the one person who scares you to death. And there’s the small issue of the dead body. Do I have your attention? I should.
Having read other works by Eryn Blackwell, I knew I had to read this book. I wasn’t disappointed. It’s hot, sticky, sweet, and full of suspense. Ms. Blackwell has created a world where I could feel the dust on the wind, see the tumbleweeds in the street, and hear the whinny of the horses. Yes, I felt like I’d stepped back in time to live alongside Lorella and Treydon.
Treydon is the sheriff and a fine hunk of man. Yes sir, I want to meet this guy. The idea that he yearned to do more than friendly protection because of his job, was sweet. He cared about Lorella more than he could understand. And when he gets her alone, it’s hot — without anyone losing their clothes. The back and forth banter is what is so fun about them. He manages to get under her skin and vice versa, making the passion between them burn brighter.
My favorite character is Lorella. She wants to protect as much as Treydon does, but for different reasons. She trusts because she has to, running a boarding house. But she’s smart enough to be cautiously trusting. Leave the walls around her heart and she won’t get hurt. Many readers can relate to her feelings. She’s been through the wringer in life. Being with Treydon could be her salvation or her detriment.
Oh, I should mention the interesting use of peach cobbler. I’ll never look at the dessert concoction again without thinking of this story. Yes, it’s that hot.
If you want a story that’s a little off the beaten path, then you need to read Sheriff. I give this story 4 cherries.
