Partners and Federal Agents, Jason Lowery and Noah Black wake up in bed together naked, but neither one knows how they got there, or to the remote cabin the bed's in. Jason's interested, very interested, but he fears his partner’s reaction and the potential fallout if their superiors ever find out. He misread a fellow officer’s interest once and lost it all -- his career, his friends, his family’s respect. This time around, he won't be the one risking everything.
Noah has always been curious about sex with another man, but his strict upbringing and life in law enforcement made it impossible to explore that side of his nature safely. When he and Jason get locked in a cabin by a well-meaning friend, Noah wants to sample the forbidden.
Both men agree to a single afternoon of passion. Just to see.
When they are released from the cabin, Jason wants to see where a relationship with Noah might lead. However, Noah is not ready to make such a radical lifestyle change -- and he doesn’t think he’ll ever be ready to come out to friends and family.
Can one afternoon of pleasure lead to something more? When Noah wakes up naked and in bed with his partner, his body reacts before his mind catches up. Soon Noah and Jason realize they’ve been kidnapped. They decide to use the afternoon to explore their passion with the understanding that it’s just a one time thing. Unfortunately Jason wants more but Noah is too scared of the implications to give in. When problems at work start to cause Noah problems, he can’t help his instinct to go running straight to Jason.
Caught by Surprise is a fun, frothy story. It’s filled with a lot of sex, some mild tension, and a plot that isn't as strong as it could be. The story mostly consists of Jason and Noah having sex, Noah being confused, and then working things out while there is a rather random subplot about their work with the FBI as an excuse to keep the story going and have more sex. Despite that, it almost doesn’t matter since the writing is fun, light, and breezy. This is a good story when you want something light and easy to read.
The characters are brought to life by the author, but feel too similar. Quite often I forgot whose point of view we were supposedly following since the two main men feel so close in thoughts and actions. Noah has more reservations about being openly gay but he gets over those issues pretty quickly. The work subplot is very odd and seems only thrown in so the resolution and happy ending can be prolonged. I didn’t really mind because the characters are fun and the sex scenes are hot.
There are some really good moments such as Noah with his younger brother and the emotional connection between Noah and Jason. I wish the story hadn’t concentrated on being so light since there was so much potential for it to be more intense and interesting. As it was, this is a decent but fluffy piece that offers some very good, hot sex scenes and likable characters. It’s not the kind of story that lingers but I'm certain you'll still enjoy reading it a lot.
