Stephen has known since he was a teenager that he was gay, but Gary has only recently accepted that he loves Stephen as more than just a friend. Accepting his feelings is one thing, acting on them is another and Gary pulls back at the intimate moment.
Stephen is not about to give up on a relationship with the man he loves and decides to woo Gary, to help ease him into that one small step that will lead to the sexual relationship they both want. Gary agrees to go on a date with him, but Stephen plays a more subtle game that Gary realizes.
However, Stephen¬s plan is interrupted when he becomes ill following a business dinner. Will it be enough to derail the dinner date Stephen has planned with Gary for the coming Friday night?
Can best-friends become lovers?
One Small Step by Stevie Woods is a wonderful short read. The storyline is fast paced but gives you just enough backstory to understand how the characters in this book have come to where they are at this point in their relationship. This is especially helpful since the book starts with a steamy kiss.
The main characters in this story, Gary and Stephen, have a great friendship all around. They also work together and spend a lot of their spare time with each other. However, a budding attraction is starting to simmer underneath the surface.
While Stephen is openly homosexual, Gary isn’t. In fact, until recently, Gary didn't consider himself gay at all. So, these feelings in uncharted territory freak Gary out. Stephen is his best friend and he doesn’t want to ruin that friendship for a different sort of relationship that he isn’t even sure he wants to have.
Stephen is the kind of friend everyone wants, especially in this sort of situation. Stephen was patient and understanding enough not to give up on Gary. There is so much heat and attraction between Gary and Stephen in One Small Step that I was surprised neither of the men had acted upon the chemistry between them sooner.
I enjoyed reading this short story. One Small Step is really sweet and touching, with just the right amount of heat. I'm sure you'll enjoy every page of it as much as I did. Stevie Woods has created a story you never want to end and when it does you want to read it all over again.
