A man with a secret.
Nicodemus Blackburn has seen the best and worst of mankind. Five hundred years of dealing with them teaches the vampire to be very wary of the creatures. Unfortunately, alarming events leave him no choice but to enter the world of the ton to hunt a rogue vampire—one who is making his own army of blood thirsty vampires. Searching for the villain is not the worst of his troubles. That can be laid at the feet of bluestocking Lady Cordelia Collingsworth.
A woman on a mission.
Cordelia has always been an outcast, even in her own family. She has forged her way in the world with her ability to write, and Nico Blackburn is the focus of her next article. Before she can obtain any information about the mysterious man, she is pulled headlong into a scandal that leaves her with no choice but to marry Nico—a man with dangerous secrets.
A passion that consumes them both.
Thrust into a world she knows nothing of, Cordelia finds herself falling in love with a man who claims to be a vampire. As their passion grows, so does the danger around them and Nico will have to call on all of his powers to protect the one thing he has realized he cannot live without: his opinionated, infuriating, and thoroughly delectable wife.
Nico Blackburn prides himself for his iron control but one night in a dark library with Lady Cordelia Collingsworth shows him just how little control he truly has.
Vampires immersed in the ton, combines two things I love, a unique take on vampires coupled with a rich historical romance. The premise paired with my love of all things Melissa Schroeder meant I had to pick this book up and the world is one I hope she returns to often. Taking an interesting twist from your standard vampire mythology there are vampires called the Born, that are born of special females called “carriers” and others that are turned called the Made, the turning of humans is extremely frowned upon since most don’t survive the change with their sanity intact.
The Blackburns are a high ranking vampire family but in the world of the ton that Lady Cordelia inhabits they are nothing but commoners. That doesn’t stop Cordelia and her strong attraction for Nico. She’s shocked to learn that vampires move among the ton and that she’s the mate of such an irritating, arrogant male. Nico avoids London and the ton but with a rogue vampire creating his own army of Made vampires, he can’t stay away. The hunt for this rogue brings just the right level of intrigue and action to keep moving the story along quickly. The supporting cast of Nico’s family and friends sets the stage for many more stories, and I can only hope we get them quickly. I fell in love with Nico’s mother and her take charge personality and the way she immediately accepted Cordelia as family. I’ll admit before this book I had reached a level of apathy when it came to vampire novels. If it hadn’t been for this book being by Melissa Schroeder and the idea of vampires hiding in plain sight among the ton, I probably wouldn’t have given this book a chance. Desire by Blood renewed my faith that there are still entertaining and interesting ideas out there.
If you are looking for a hot, sexy, alpha male and a smart, sassy heroine who holds her own, look no further than Nico Blackburn and Cordelia Collingsworth. This is the perfect story for you, if you love delicious historicals and don’t mind a unique paranormal twist.
